Yogyakarta Temples: Exploring Prambanan and Borobudur

The vibrant Indonesian city of Yogyakarta, often known as Jogja in the local dialect, is home to two UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the well-known Borobudur and the (somewhat) lesser-known Prambanan.

How to Visit Both Temples in Yogyakarta

You might go to one for sunrise and one for sunset at various parts of the city. As an alternative, stop by Borobudur en route to the Dieng Plateau.
Borobudur and Prambanan have entrance fees of 270,000 IDR ($27/£14) and 210,000 IDR ($21/£11), respectively; however, a combined ticket (not advertised, but ask for it) that allows you to see both is available for 360,000 IDR. You should determine the most efficient route to Yogyakarta based on your origin in Indonesia.

Borobudur

It is renowned worldwide as the biggest Buddhist temple in Indonesia. Although it was pretty calm when I arrived in the afternoon, expect plenty of visitors. It is a magnificent architectural feat situated in a lovely park. Trekking up nearby Mount Merapi for a sunrise tour is a well-liked way to witness the dawn.
This seemed much more touristic than the other one. You must pass through at least some of the market in order to exit the park area.

The Prambanan

a group of Hindu temples re-established in a verdant setting. Despite being smaller and less impressive than Borobudur, it is nonetheless well worth a visit. Avoid the crowds by going at dusk, but be prepared that if you want to see all the temples, it will take a few hours to stroll. It might be wise to divide your visit over two days if you want to thoroughly examine both.

Go there locally.

Numerous tours are offered to both temples. To go there yourself, though, is rather simple and just costs a few dollars.

Prambanan is located closer to the city’s airport. Take a local Trans Jogja bus to the airport, where you can change. The ticket office is a short tuk-tuk drive or a 20-minute walk from the bus terminal. From the heart of Yogyakarta, allow a little more than an hour.

You can take a local bemo (bus) to Borobudur. To make the connection, you will have to change and ride a Trans Jogja bus to the Jombor terminal, which is just outside of town. From the city center, this journey will take roughly two hours.
